Lady vs. Woman
What is the difference between a lady and a woman? Is it the same as the difference between a gentleman and a man? And what is the difference between those two? Last week in class, we were trying to consider the difference between a lady and a woman. Before you read any further into this blog, check out the many connotations of the word "lady" at this website. The writer of this page suggests that the word "lady" is used to describe a "woman" of refined behavior or speech. Then why is it called the "ladies" room? Is there something dainty or delicate about using the bathroom that I am missing? But that is beside the point. My question is this: Is there a set role that a female must fit in order to be called a lady instead of a woman? And which is better? There are a lot of opinions and situations regarding this topic, so what is yours?

Well, being a dude, guy, man, etc., I think that I may not be as familiar with this topic as others may be. But I can address a similar topic: the difference between a man and a gentleman. Man quite simply refers to a gender, and not much else. Gentleman, on the other hand, addresses the maturity of a man. I personally don't think age has anything to do with these classifications. Some middle age drunkard who beats his wife is clearly not a gentleman, whereas a young boy who is polite could be referred to as a gentleman. I assume that this is basically the same with regards to lady vs. woman, but quite honestly I am not sure.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post- interesting question! I think that the term "lady" is a sign of respect and high order, like is "gentleman". A Lady is an official title, ie First Lady. Calling someone a lady as opposed to a woman does not mean much in everyday conversation, though. In regards to the bathroom, I'm guessing the "lady's room" refers to a customer at some sort of a business. The managers refer to "ladies" as a term of respect, as they are paying guests. Beyond that, I have no clue either.
