During AS this week we talked about how when you visit southern states, you will still see some confederate flags. We wondered whether this means that people in the South believe in slavery or if it means something else. Another thing that I noticed was that there are a lot of things in the media and pop culture. Here are some examples of the confederate flag seen in today's culture:
ABOVE: General Lee from Dukes of Hazard
LEFT: Lynyrd Skynyrd logo
BOTTOM RIGHT: just your average southern motorcyclist
So why do people still wave the flag of the confederate army? One writer waves the confederate flag in honor of southern heritage. Check out this opinion here. Do you buy this answer? Is it OK for people to still honor this flag?
I think one of the biggest reasons that people still wear/display the flag is because they feel a tie to that old establishment of the south. I have found that southerners are very clique-ish.My dad grew up in the south and we visit family in Georgia a lot. Their accents, hospitality, and food are all great sources of pride and I think some southerners see the flag as a symbol of all of that and not as a symbol of slavery or the confederacy. While I dont condone wearing the flag I think they definatly have the right to and if it stands for something they think is different then I think its okay. Btws the "average southern motorcyclist" is spot on. We see like millions of biker gangs down there xD
